Wayne and William White Engineering Design Centre

Located within the University of British Columbia’s campus, the Wayne and William White Engineering Design Centre aims to provide a dedicated space where engineering students of different disciplines can learn and grow together. This 2-storey facility encourages interaction and collaboration by providing spaces that allow for interdisciplinary coursework.

Exposed reinforced concrete was intentionally chosen for the primary structure, as it provided the robustness that the space required while also serving as a raw example of the structural elements within the building.  At the heart of the building, an inviting multi-storey wood-glass atrium draws the users to the interior spaces and serves as the main entrance to the building. The combination of rugged materials such as concrete and metal with warm and inviting wood elements gives the building an industrial feel with a modern twist.

Overall, the Wayne and William White Engineering Design Centre has served as a positive impact on the UBC engineering community by offering a state-of-the-art space for education and teamwork. The building’s design has been well received and is seen as an asset to the university, promoting innovation and excellence in the field of engineering.
