A legacy building for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Trout Lake Community Centre was built during the second phase of the neighbourhood master plan.
Having been involved with the structural design of the earlier-built Trout Lake Arena, Fast + Epp was keen to develop a complementary structure for the community centre that would use this same curved-roof design vocabulary. The roof and an intentional allocation of space between the two facilities both unites the buildings, and ensures the stunning views of John Hendry Park remain unimpeded for surrounding residents.
Portions of the building are embedded into the grade, improving the overall energy performance, while other spaces make the most of natural lighting and ventilation to create a natural and healthy atmosphere. The structure is a mixture of cast-in-place concrete, steel and reclaimed wood from felled old-growth forests after the devastating 2006 windstorm in Vancouver’s Stanley Park.
The two-storey community venue includes a gymnasium, fitness centre and training room, multi-purpose rooms for music and art classes, administrative offices and an outdoor festival plaza.
