Construction for Harvard University bike canopy underway
August 21, 2020
Fast + Epp has been working in collaboration with Behnisch Architekten, Jan Knippers Ingenieure of Stuttgart, and Blumer Lehmann on the cross-laminated timber (CLT) bike canopy at the new 500,000 square foot Science and Engineering Complex at Harvard University in Boston, MA.
Using a folded-plate structural system, the bike canopy is made up triangular CLT roof panels that span between steel columns, interlocking with joints and mechanical fasteners, to create a unique roof geometry. Fast + Epp was involved with doing the calculation package review and conversion to the US code.
The bike parking station will have nearly 100 spaces for bicycles.
