Set gently within the forest on Salt Spring Island, this modest cabin hovers above the ground with minimal impact to the surrounding foliage, as the site has archaeological First Nations history of rich midden soils dating back over 3000 years.
In the efforts to reduce excavation and changes to site hydrology, the entire cabin was lifted on slender steel columns and braces. The structure was designed to be flexible, allowing the design team site measure critical tree roots and move footings when necessary to protect critical tree roots.
Working with the contractor and architect, readily available materials and methods were used to suit the remote location and available trades. Prefabrication and modularization were considered, however, standard light wood framing helped to fit the design within the tight budget.
