Ottawa’s OPL-LAC joint facility design revealed
February 7, 2020
The design for the new Ottawa Public Library and Library and Archives Canada Joint Facility was unveiled last month by the Mayor of Ottawa. Inspired by residents, Indigenous communities, and Canadians from coast to coast, the architectural philosophy behind this new landmark is about coming together as a community for gathering, learning, and discovery. Fast + Epp is pleased to collaborate with Diamond Schmitt Architects and KWC Architects on the new $192 million facility.
The 216,000 square feet structure will feature a striking undulating roof while the exterior consists of Ontario limestone to mimic the nearby escarpment and greenspace. The use of locally sourced wood in the interior as well as the exterior references the connection to forestry and nature as well as Ottawa’s logging history. Tall windows all around the building will invite large expansive views of the Ottawa River and Gatineau Hills.
The new facility is expected to draw in approximately 1.7 million visitors annually and will also be a place that showcases rare artifacts and collections. Construction is anticipated to start in spring 2021 and finish in 2024.
