As an organization serving outdoor enthusiasts, Mountain Equipment Co-op has sought to link its brand identity to environmental stewardship. When it came time to build this new retail store in North Vancouver, the project goals included integrating sustainability and passive design principles into the building, and holistically linking an adjacent public park to the store to attract customers and promote community gathering space.

To maximize the passive approach to sustainable design, Fast + Epp developed a concrete, steel and timber structure with a distinctive sawtooth roof.  Its form and south-facing Solera glazing units allow the store to be entirely lit with natural light during daytime hours.

This project sets a new precedent for retail construction. While retail stores generally connotate consumption rather than conservation, the new MEC North Vancouver store reflects the brand’s commitment to environmental stewardship, outdoor recreation, and public education and engagement.
