As housing affordability in Vancouver pushes residents further from the downtown core, many families have chosen to relocate to suburbs such as Coquitlam, Port Moody, and Burnaby.

In response to the growing need for affordable and sustainable public transit from these areas, the Evergreen Line was born. This 11-kilometre eastern extension to Vancouver’s existing Millennium Line SkyTrain system will provide fast, frequent and convenient service with six new stations.

Fast + Epp’s role was the structural design of three stations (Coquitlam Central, Moody Centre and Inlet Centre), as well as the prototypical design elements for the line’s other stations. The goal was to develop a common structural language that could be applied to the full range of architectural and site conditions encountered at the various stations.

In response, our firm created a prefabricated steel and glue-laminated timber hybrid system – it allows for flexibility while still accommodating the integration of various station services within the structure. Repetition of elements between stations ensures high quality and economy.

Each station is expected to be a catalyst for future development – by 2021, the line is expected to carry up to 70,000 daily passengers.
