Suffering from years of deterioration since its original construction in the mid 1960’s, Centennial Arena was in dire need of repair. To make matters worse, the existing wood and steel moment frames were ill-suited to the day-to-day functions of the building.
In response to the limitations of the project budget (and in keeping with the client’s desire to retain and reuse the existing building), Fast + Epp developed a novel structural solution – converting the existing 32m spanning wood and steel moment frames into new wood and steel trusses.

This allowed for the removal of both the deteriorated portions of the original frame and the elements of the existing structure that were obstructing the function of the building.
Since the Centennial Arena has been reopened to the public, the arena’s manager and user groups have expressed their delight with the new look of the building and their pleasure to have their “old arena” – and its memories – back.
