Engineering a ship-building shed

February 26, 2019

Recently completed, this 1400 ft2 custom, handcrafted, traditional timber frame shed will soon be home to a small-scale ship building practice. The builders, Eric Letham and Spencer Duncan, are hobby small boat builders and intend to use the shed to build a custom, wooden 40 ft sail boat to sail to New Zealand.

Engineered by Fast + Epp, the shed’s building technique dates back to the 12th century. The visually impressive exposed structure boasts joints that are precisely designed and cut, and fastened with oak dowels – a technique that requires very little use of metal.

Located in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, close attention to detail and master craftsmanship characterize this warm space.
